DJ Layla

How to impress G’pa and Grandma Jane? Layla knew just what to do. She saved this new trick just for them. It’s no surprise really, she’s watched her parents play dueling iPods since birth. We just take turns playing songs on our iPods, switching between the two after each song. But while sitting around the living room catching up with the latest set of grandparents to visit us this winter, Layla walked over, took mine out of the iPod dock and put her dad’s in and started dancing in circles. You just can’t plan this stuff. Everyone looked around amazed. She continued to do this, taking out the iPod, skipping songs until she found one she thought worthy of spinning in circles to, and then gracefully set it back on the dock. ( She appears to like bluegrass, classic rock and the Beatles.) And  I guess I should mention she gets the device in and out smoother than both her parents.
So did Apple purposefully make it’s interface 100% toddler friendly? I know I’m not the only parent to suddenly look down and see their two year old has not only pulled up Netflix on their iPhone but has happily found and begun to watch their favorite show, this time, Shaun the Sheep.
We can’t pull out the iPad without Layla pitter-pattering over ready to play Elmo Alphabet. She knows the difference between mommy’s Kindle and daddy’s iPad, as well as iPods and iPhones- I say the wrong name more often than she does.
She can switch from one app to the next, swishing her finger across the screen to browse and select her choice of entertainment. She knows what button will take her back to the menu and very rarely gets stuck. She has yet to buy anything, but I feel we are in dangerous territory and it’s only a matter of time. We should probably learn the parental controls on our devices before something strange arrives in the mail or she’s  purchased some app affording her parental mind control…
All I have to say is thank goodness for Otterboxes ( blatant, but honest plug for husband’s company here) and believe me, I’ll be working on expanding Layla’s musical taste to include some REM and maybe some early 90’s alternative- this business of taking mom’s out to put dad’s in, well let’s just say I won’t go down without a fight.

Old Town Fun with the Grandparents!!

Snooze is always worth the wait
